New releases and recommendations June 3

The weekend is here and it’s time to sit back, put your feet up and relax in front of your Roku.  We’ll be highlighting new releases and recommended titles across all our channels weekly so that you won’t have to do any heavy lifting.  And as usual, if you have any suggestions on what to watch, post them in the comments below.

Family Ties - The classic Emmy-winning sitcom from the 80′s. (1982)
Howl - Allen Ginsberg’s biopic centered around his poem “Howl” (2010)
Reservoir Dogs – Quentin Tarantino’s directorial debut. (1992)

Pulp Fiction – One of the most iconic and imitated films of the 90′s (1994)
The English Patient – A passionate drama set in the back drop of WWII (1996)
A Hard Day’s Night - The first Beatles movie that help define their appeal (1964)

I am Number 4 – A young man with extraordinary powers is next in line to be killed by a ruthless enemy (2011)
The Mechanic - Jason Statham plays an elite assassin…enough said. (2011)
No Strings Attached
– A modern look at what happens when friends-in-need do the deed. (2011)

Bad Boys – Will Smith and Martin Lawrence re-invent the buddy cop dynamic in Michael Bay’s gleefully A.D.D. directorial debut. (1995)
Ghostbusters - Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis are on call in the greatest sci-fi comedy ever made. (1994)
So I Married An Axe Murderer
– Mike Myers first flashed his deft skill for showcasing multiple characters in this totally original cult black comedy. (1993)

Thanks for this list – its good to know what some of the new offerings are. My grand kids and I love the ROKU.

Interesting to see how Amazon beats those other clowns at their own game with up to date and recent release movies.

Sure. At $5 per movie. And recent does not mean good…

  • Dana

    I need Rhapsody :(

  • Daphne S Hall

It would be nice if ROKU would add season 4,5 and 6 of Chicago Hope to the listing. I was soooo disspointed when I finished season 3 and found out the others weren’t there :( .

    We need more family movies!

    • Anonymous

We actually have an entire family movie section on Stupid For movies- where we recommend movies the family can watch. It’s on our “Streamin’ Garage” channel- Stupid For Movies- Parental Guidance.

  • Dianne

How about adding ratings to the list? I have children here and I am very conservative.

Hey guys- we recommend top streaming movies every week on our new Roku channel! “Streamin’ Garage” is the name of the channel- the show is called “Stupid For Movies” And the segment is called “Instant Gratification: Cutting the Cord.” Two members of LA Film Critics Association recommend 4 films each week you can watch instantly on your Roku box!

I like this idea of Roku letting us know about new films being made available on the various streaming outlets. However, I will now never do anything pay-per-view (as one might with Amazon or Hulu Plus) since every evening for the past few days the signal strength for my XDS goes to one half of total strength. Even the HD movies become somewhat pixelated…. Only (it seems) around 10pm (EDT) do things appear to go back to full-steam again (HD quality.)

Thank you. Any way of knowing of Amazon “prime” unlimited streaming titles as well? Uts frustrating to see the same titles as I scroll.

    • Douglas

Absolutely Mike! Thanks for the comment – we’ll work on getting Amazon Prime in the new releases post in the future….

There’s an interesting bit of free programing i wish Roku would carry, Classic Arts Showcase.

    http://www.classicartsshowcase.org/

and according to them: CAS is available free to any broadcaster that wants it, can pick up our C-Band satellite signal, and will agree to air it without commercials, and without charging anyone for the show. For this reason we are never picked up by commercial enterprises like cable companies (or, in this case, a streaming service). We usually carried by cable access channels, and a couple of PBS channels.

Now to get Roku to stream it, humm..how?

None of the services do a great job up updating the “new” releases that we are actually interested in, but I have an app on my iPhone called Flicks Watch that is pretty good for Netflix that helps, just as an FYI.
