New Releases and Recommendations for Aug. 19

Friday’s here—and that means it’s time for another round of weekend recommendations. Below you’ll find some highlighted titles from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Crackle and Amazon Instant Video.  As always, if you have a suggestion on the perfect lazy Sunday flick, please post ‘em in the comments.

Netflix New Releases:

  • Tangled- Mandy Moore, Zachery Levi and Donna Murphy voice this animated Disney twist on the classic Grimm Brothers’ Rapunzel (2010)
  • Ride with the Devil- Ang Lee directs an all-star cast in this circa Civil War drama (1999)
  • The Best of Fractured Fairy Tales- Originally aired on ‘The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show’—these classic goofy tales now have a life of their own (1962)

Hulu Plus New Releases:

  • The Electric Playground- Catch up on the latest developments in gaming, entertainment and tech with this daily newscast (2011)
  • Last Summer at Coney Island- Interesting documentary focused on the past, present and future of the once-magnificent amusement park (2011)
  • The Daily Show with Jon Stewart- Watch the latest episode from Comedy Centrals’ humorous take on the news (2011)

Crackle New Releases:

  • We Own the Night- A-list talent led by Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg show their mettle in a cool cops and robbers riff on Cain & Abel (2007)
  • Reign Over Me- Adam Sandler delivers his best dramatic turn yet in a moving performance that keeps pace with the mighty Don Cheadle (2007)
  • Das Boot- Forget The Hunt For Red October, this is the grittiest and most realistically suspenseful submarine thriller ever shot (1982)

Amazon Instant Video New Releases:

  • Priest- A unique horror-western based on the vampire hunting graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung (2011)
  • The Conspirator- Robert Redford directs the riveting true story behind the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln (2011)
  • Hoodwinked Too!- This side-splitting sequel to Hoodwinked follows Little Red and her gang as they investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel (2011)
