DISHWorld Launches on Roku

DISHWorld Launches on Roku Platform

At Roku we believe that the majority of TV programming will be delivered on-demand, over the Internet within the next four years. Today we’re a step closer to making that a reality.  We’ve partnered with DISH to bring the DISHWorld service with more than 50 international channels to the Roku platform in the U.S. – including the leading Hindi, Arabic, Urdu, Bangla and Brazilian channels.

The DISHWorld service offers a variety of live foreign language programming including sports, movies, news, children’s programs, music, cooking shows, talk shows and general entertainment. At launch programming includes:

  • An extensive offering of Arabic channels exclusive to DISH including MBC, Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera;
  • Market-leading Hindi channels including aapka Colors, Sony, SET Max, Star Plus, Zee TV, B4U and aaj Tak;
  • Willow Cricket and TEN Cricket with eight Cricket Boards and more than 150 days per year of live cricket;
  • Seven of Pakistan’s most popular television channels including GEO TV, ARY Digital and Hum TV;
  • Four popular channels from Bangladesh including ATN Bangla, Channel I, ETV Bangla and NTV Bangla;
  • TV Globo Internacional and PFC which showcase the best Brazilian television programs and soccer events.

If you don’t see the language or programming you are looking for today, DISH plans to quickly expand the DISHWorld service to include additional languages and programming on the Roku platform in the near future. The service also features “48-hour Rewind” that allows customers to watch any show aired in the last 48 hours on any of the channels featured in their subscription package.

Packages start as low as $19.99 per month, and are structured for streaming only – this means there is no authentication, or satellite subscription required.

For us streaming aficionados, this is huge – it’s the first time that programming traditionally accessible only through a pay-TV bundle is made available on a streaming player through a streaming-only subscription.  For customers, the DISH-Roku deal means even more choice and accessibility. DISHWorld brings to Roku a comprehensive selection of international programming while Roku delivers an exceptional streaming experience.

The DISHWorld service is available in the Roku Channel Store on Roku 2 and Roku LT players; and is expected to be available this summer on the new Roku HD player (model 2500R). Roku models not listed will not have the DISHWorld service.

    This is awesome, Roku rocks!

If you partner with BBC iPlayer, I’m in! They’ve been promising an International option for years now and nothing ever happens . . . Last I heard it was supposed to be available in the US last year, but still nothing.

    • Sat

Nothing will happen. U.K people have to buy a T.V license that fund the BBC, even if they dont want bbc it is how it is. There would be a up roar if others got to view BBC programs free, while U.K watchers had to pay. Only U.K I.P address’s can access BBC I player. Only thing you can do is change your I.P address vis hidemyass.com or other such sites. U.K English G.B T.V license i forget which one

      • Me

There are some services that require a subscription. Why could they not do it that way?

  • Artshowreject

This is awesome, and a step in the right direction. Can’t wait until something like this is available for US channels.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Tracking.nut Wally O’Brien

My biggest wish is that ROKU could get ABC, NBC, CBS and especially PBS.

    • Zkrs33

Look for the us tv now private channel…. You can get all of those channels!

    • Abys32

They should design apps that livestream free public tv stations (ABC, NBC, etc). Including local would be the best. The networks would even be able to monitor how many of their ads are viewed. I don’t channel surf when I watch Hulu and probably would be less likely to switch apps to watch another network then to channel surf on cable. ROKU could charge them for the stats info. Win-win-win.

      • http://www.twitter.com/davezatz Dave Z

Except logic does not allows prevail. Further, these guys want to serve their content in their ways. Ads are regional and local carriers are a big part of their business. Aereo could change things… it’ll be interesting to see how their legal challenges develop.

    • Stranger

Yeah, USTVNOW has all of those channels streaming live!!

      • Mee1

But for the time being, our service is only available for those of you that are traveling overseas or reside abroad and have no other way to watch TV from the US.

Since we have detected a U.S. IP address live viewing has been disabled until you are abroad.

So how can I use this USTVNOW if I’m not abroad.????

    • geepsterz

We live right between San Francisco and Sacramento, or ~50 miles out in the fringe. I have tried several antennas, but I recently bought a $30 WineGard (paper thin) flat antenna (Costco), that uses the standard coax TV coupling. Mine hides under my TV; way too simple, and fantastic. ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, + plenty more. One-time cost; free local TV forever…

  • Roku User since 08

Directv offers live streaming of their shows to their customers online and remote access.to.their home DVRs on their PCs while away- how much harder would it be to make a Roku app for.a.company that already offers these services so I can watch them on my tv instead of laptop screen? And not pay the same basically as Hulu Plus for less content???

    • Uwe

German programming has become way too political. I being born in Germany (1960), I too would love to see it, but the programming offered is not the same as if I lived in Germany.

      • Uwe

Sorry, I misdirected this reply to the wrong comment.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PG2M7PIJZWOOXNBQL2HCUXRLHI Richard L

Why would you have directv and then want it fed through a Roku? That just adds a step into the process.

  • jeff

If roku gets involved with dish or direct get ready to spend big bucks for internet tv. They are the reason i bought a roku and started streaming in the first place. PRICES OF SAT TV went so high i cancled direct ,put up an antenna and bought 2 rokus. I for 1 am glad i did it ,but now they are trying to sneek in our roku boxes and next thing you know internet tv will be just like sat tv draining our pockets.Just wait and see.

There are plenty of platforms out there (Boxee, GoogleTV, NetGear NEO TV, XBOX, Panasonic VieraConnect, Samsung SmartTV, and others). IF Roku sells out, there will be plenty of other options for us consumers; who ultimately will win out and be able to choose what we watch.

I would like access to the Eurosportchannel and whatever car racing channels, MotorsTV etc are in Europe satellite areas. If course the ESPN 800 pound gorilla and the Fox Sports/SpeedTX would object with their strength and money.

Awesome, hope you can bring some Australia content soon via this service! (AFL, Rugby, Network programming) – love Roku.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=527100607 Dan Clarke

Fantastic. Now that AlJazerra has a lot of soccer rights for the French and Spanish leagues, I can watch Al Jazeera Sport. Thank you. Now, get GolTV or whatever has the Bundesliga, and I’m there!

  • http://david.vankomen.me/ David Van Komen

I already have a Dish subscription, so this doesn’t exactly apply directly to me. However, this is an exciting step for the television industry! I can’t wait to just stream live television shows from a Roku device. Great work!

What’s about German? Really would enjoy some german programming.

I wish I could get some dutch tv!!

  • http://crazyforkdrama.blogspot.com/ Stephanie Kurze

Huge Roku fan. I’m crossing my fingers for Korea’s MBC. I just learned they had a DirectTV channel and having it be available on my Roku box would be a huge help!

  • Kit111

If you have a ROKU already you can get several other channels with a low priced monthly subscription to PlayOn.com or you can pay a ONE TIME ONLY fee of $79… get your ABC, CBS AND PBS stuff there…

  • Tom Burke

I understand some want to stream channels like ABC, NBC, and CBS but I get them free, and very clear via a simple antenna hooked up to my tv. The only benefit I see to getting them to stream, is losing the antenna, or for those who do not get a good antenna signal. JMHO. In addition, I love my Roku and the constant additions and updates. Keep up the good work. Roku was a great birthday present I received last year, and I now tell everyone I know about it.

    • Taln SG

The antenna issue is exactly why I would like the free broadcast networks through my Roku. Despite 3 different antenna designs, my local digital channels constantly drop signal and.or get interferrence. Except on rare occassions I cannot even get the local ABC affiliate, and I am less than 10 miles from the studio!

  • Jptsetme

I’m hoping this is a precursor to more subscription streaming content. I’m looking at you, NFL Sunday Ticket!

I don’t want a dish — I just want my NFL. And I’m willing to pay for it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500649528 Rob Collier

Not available for 1st gen Roku? Fail.

  • Stephen

What about any content from Australia? The Australia channel or any of the free2airs would be awesome. Would pay for that!

    • s@reagan.com

Check out the MHz Networks channel. http://www.mhznetworks.com/ They currently have AFL I know; maybe some others as well.

    • Fkdjk

      They have ABC.

      • Auzusa

From what I have seen it is NOT the Australian Broadcasting Commission (aka ABC)….I would like Fkdjk to tell me – and everyone else – exactly where they saw this in the Channel Store, as I am quite keen to watch something from Oz other than the AFL.

  • Suman

Why leave out the Roku HD/XD customers?

  • http://www.facebook.com/tony.padgett66 Tony Padgett

Congratulations, Roku, on a step in the right direction. Would love to see the Japan Channel on this (for my wife).

USTVNOW – It’s okay as far as quality is concerned. The channels are not HD and not widescreen. To get the full HD experience, you’ll need to pay at least $100 a month and use Boxee or stream through your computer. Not good. :(

PlayON – Requires you to have their app installed on your computer and then stream from it. And, not compatible with the Mac. :(

But, looks like we are getting closer!

    • Taln SG

Another here for Japan Channel! ROku has tons fo programming for India and almost none for NE Asia. Really wish Roku could work a deal with the Japanese and Korean networks.

  • Ralphk

Roku should stop discriminating foreign language channels in having their own channels available in USA for their clients instead of forcing them to join DishWorld .

  • Mee1

So how can I use this USTVNOW if I’m not abroad.????

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PZVANEINEYMGVWKEAL6LZ7SVRA Amit

problem is no recording capability for live broadcast on Roku. Also DISHWorld is not cheap subscription in Hindi channels is same as having a Dish, IPTV have long way to go.

  • Anonymous

My wife loves that 48 hour rewind feature on the Roku that she uses with the PFC and Globo TV channels. As soon as I heard the announcement from a Dish co-worker that Wednesday, I went home and surprised her with the channels so she can stay in touch with her homeland. The channels look good in standard definition on our big screen TV, but we still need our 200 HD channels we get from Dish for the stunning quality we get. The kids watch a lot of National Geographic, Discovery and Animal Planet and we like that it is educational for them, which looks so fantastic in HD on our 1080p TV. Sometimes I think I’m right there in the Antarctic with them.

    Your Internet connection. Everything
Else works except dish iptv. I can watch movie on crackle login to Netflix. I think
This dish iptv world is not gonna work. It was waste of my money

i am having same issue. I tried to contact DishWorld customer service from last 1 week they have same answer it will be fixed on next 24 hours. and finally they told that use your old box. Their old service was no good but with Roku their service is terrible. Its better to use your laptop and watch online.

I wonder if the new channels will be unwatchable due to saturation ads? I can get ABC CBS etc off an antenna but I never watch them since the ads slice the programs up so much as to ruin any pleasure you might get out of the show

  • http://twitter.com/MigeoRockshor Migeo Rockshor

I tried 2 Rokus, specifically to watch The GB Network…both units were useless.

Now that Roku has decided to assist in spreading the jihadists message by carrying al jazeera, I definitely won’t be trying a third…

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PG2M7PIJZWOOXNBQL2HCUXRLHI Richard L

Well if you are buying a product that allows you to load specific content and purposely seek out the GB Network, the units were not useless it was the operator.

Why is there a conspicuous absence of programming from the United Kingdom? We in the USA are probably more closely aligned with the UK than with Islamic programming.

    • Guest

who give a rat’s rear how you are aligned … Do you have money and subscriber number to show for it.

  • geepsterz

I am hoping that DishWorld would extend to Japan broadcasts. We only watch the one and only NHK station (AKA TV Japan) that is available on carriers like Dish, Comcast, and AT&T, but it’s expen$ive since you need to pay for even their basic package, -just to get this one station that we watch.

For local stations, I found the neatest (and smallest) flat antenna from Costco ($30) that brings in stations in super clear HD that are 50+ miles away.
So, if DishWorld brings in NHK (and maybe more Japanese stations), our current cable bill would be slashed by >70%. Please make this wish come true!

    • 123itsme

YES! there are several families here (ours included) that would like to see TV Japan offered on ROKU

  • Akamatsu

I would like to see TV Japan added.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/2NASAW3CSWR3DCDDXUPALCANSY sharky

This is a step in the right direction. I would gladly pay per channel for those cable channels not already offered via roku, but I’m sure some people would rather have a bundle option

Al Jazeera, Bangladesh, Pakistan — is this a joke? Who cares about Arab programming. Where is France? England?

    • Lola

lol when did bangladesh and pakistan become Arab?

      • Cindy

Haha! As an Arab, I care about these channels. Thanks for asking.

    • Eddy

If you dont care than dont comment on it. Dont always have to show your ignorance in everything. I am glad I live in Cali so I dont deal with many of you out here. Oh and FYI – Bangladesh & Pakistan are not Arab! Some one failed geography…

    • mercenarygrip

I agree, all those Arab countries, like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Poland, Ireland, Brazil, et. al. Dog gone Arabs, all of ‘em. Hahaha :)

  • Mark

WHAT HAPPENED TO UK, FRANCE, ITALY, EUROPE AND MORE SO WESTERN EUROPE,
HAVE THEY DISAPPEARED FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH, ?????

Last I checked they are still there. I would second the previous comment that we in the USA are more aligned with Europe than your recommended pick of Arabic, Pakistani, Bangladeshi programs

    • Matt

You need to have market and subscribers to back it up. The fact is that not many people from those countries migrate to USA and look for these subscriptions.

  • willow wench

Is it possible to get BBC America and PBS on Roku? That would be worth paying for

    • Consular5

download an app online from your roku acct called nowhere tv it will give you everything you need

  • Rick

Why on earth are you limiting this to the latest players? This is not the way to engender customer loyalty. If I need to buy a new player to access this I might as well get the Dune player and subscribe to Polsky.TV since I’m mostly interested in Polish channels. A slap in the face to your early adopters.

  • Lola

    Whoohooo Hindi Channels….

  • pkulta

Folks relax. There are more than just the channels Roku has listed. Go to the DishTV website and look for yourself. There are plenty of Euro channels to choose from: France, Germany Poland, etc. As far as UK channels, I have never seen any available in the US so blaming it on ROKU or Dish is just misplaced anger. BBC America is the only channel ever to be made available here. Join TunnelBear if you want to stream UK content.

  • Docuscribe

One more here for Japanese content. I will pay!

  • Alis

DISH WORLD SUCKS. Thank you for cancelling my account and not submitting my refund. I have to call back 3 weeks later and then someone goes “Oh sorry we forgot to submit your refund.” AKA we will just take your money until you call us to figure to claim it.

    Thanks but no thanks. Boo.

I would stay away from dishworld period. There representatives are very rude. They are not trained to work with the systems they are provided. My package was changed & account information erased with no explanation. I have been a Client for almost a year but the rude service I received today was the end. I will cancel my service. roku is a great company but it is a negative that they partnered with such a company.
    Regards,

I will post my opinion again even though it was deleted by roku PR it seems like. I had positive feedback about roku as a company but not after my message was deleted. Again….I have been a client of dish world for the past year. It is a terrible company with the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered. The representative are incompetent and can’t work with there company computers. Ever since they have partnered with roku my package was changed and account information deleted with no explanation. the rep suggested that maybe I should right an email to the CEO if I have a problem. I will disconnect my service and go with a different company. Plent of competition with good client services. Roku made a big mistake to partner with such a company.

So basically they’re going to start charging for stuff that’s already there for free? Time to start looking for an alternative to Roku.

  • sree

Don’t buy Roku if you want to watch international channels. Dishworld partnered with Roku and all other content providers are now kicked out of Roku. Dishworld charges are too high.

I got the ROKU player couple of days ago and I was trying to some Telugu channels over the ROKU and I couldnot find them like Yupp TV and reliable IPTV and which were available couple of weeeks back and I inquired with the customer care of Roku and they told me that I need to get Dish NetworkIptv
and Dish Network is website down like more than 2 days

I have roku and the only reason to buy it was youtube and international IPtvs. However, ROKU just like NETLIX is going down because it ignored majority of its customers who are internationals who bought it or iptv, not or the dish world which is available only on roku2. Roku should think about it again and make it available on all devices and also make strong decision on youtube.

  • Ravi

My reply back to Roku4:20 PM (25 minutes ago)to helpThank you for your response, but this means every year I need to buy a new device. I had bought this device just last year and it has become obsolete????Very disappointing ?????????????????????????????????????
What good is the device for me now.. when I cannot watch what I want and the very reason I had bought this device to see Indian channels and you do not support other providers and only Dishworld and for that you want me to buy a new device.
    Very very disappointing.
    Ravi

  • Ponniyin Selvan

I bought a ROKU XDS device a while back – primarily for watching Indian channels
Now roku has exclusive agreement with DISH World and apparently DISH World is not available in ROKU XDS
They expect me to spend another $100 to buy a ROKU 2 box!!
Now that I know that ROKU will expect me to buy an updated version every few years, I’ll never buy a ROKU player ever again
And I’ll discourage anybody from buying it
(Actually I was thinking of buying couple more ROKU players for my other TVs )
Go for a samsung or lg or panasonic blu ray player – they sure have enough apps & they will definitely upgrade their software and not expect you to buy a new device every few years!
I hope ROKU realizes that maintaining trust with the customer base is the most important thing and whenever a company betrays it they go downhil from that point!

  • Srini

Loved Roku for 2 years.. but now good bye Roku. Good technology but monopolizing the content to just Dish World is such a bad idea and can take this company south. I had Dish earlier.. pricey, very limited options, contract, poor DVR .. etc .. etc.. the very reasons for me to move to Roku and now that Roku is taking away all the benefits that made me move away from Dish.

  • ram

Roku sold out its customers. my indian telugu TV channel service is now 10x the price. now the unit is a doorstop !

  • suresh

This is bad. I came to know today that due to this tie up with Dish , roku blocked reliable IPTv. Now i am not able to add reliableIPTv.

Its ok to tie up with Dish but it makes no sense to block other streaming channels

  • Ruben Leal

nobodies upset that roku has partnered up with dish, this is a foreboding sign, that the true future of roku and on demmand programming will have to flow thru the coffers of dish network and other monopolous satitilite and cable dinosaurs. this move sucks!!!

  • onBliss

By dropping YuppTV, you are going to turn off several subscribers. At least one – me.

  • Dr Michael Lee

PBS NBC and all others can be on roku the apps are there but they are simply behind times

  • Darrell

When we are going to see french and italian channels ?

  • tpview

Dish tv sucks. Why you guys stopping other indian streaming movie channels. Play fair.

  • raj

Everybody knows dishtv forced roku to stop watchsuntv.com hindi channels app. How can you do something like this?? Stop telling what is there in the technology…. Many people bought roku so that they can enjoy cheap live stream. Dish TV comes and you restrict them all. What is this? In the age of open source and internet such steps are so unethical.

  • Chris

Need YOUTUBE on ROKU. Please bring it on.

  • iamvb

    good bye roku

  • lusotch

  • Soumya Bhattacharya

I am a Databazaar subscriber. Roku/dishworld dropped this channel. It is a bad move. I will surely not recommend a Roku player to anyone interested in Bengali movies. Dishworld’s own Bengali movie lineup is pretty lame compared to Databazaar.

  • Sammy

Jim, why are you dropping Databazaar Media for the sake of Dishworld – can’t then live both inside the roku box???

Dish World’s bengali channel line up is pathetic – whereas Databazaar has reach content of India movies specially bengali ones – ohh yes it doesn’t cost $19.99 for databazaar as like Dish – what a pathetic decision ….

You would get bad PR from the immigrant community for this decision …

  • navrajdhaliwal

Do we have fox soccer on Roku?

  • cu_

Yupp. It is a bad move on Roku’s part to drop all other providers. I just found out today. What Roku is not realizing that there are a TON of other devices like these and smart TVs that will be happy to host other providers. I used to recommend Roku as the next big thing to all my friends. Now, I will recommend against this just for this reason. It was nice while it lasted. They made the player USELESS for me after I purchased. A year from now, you will realize why your sales have dropped so much. The biggest reason I went to roku is because I got sick of dish.
