Roku mobile app updated with Play on Roku, international support

The official Roku mobile app just became the best remote in the house.

We know what you’re thinking – you can already use the app to replay favorite movie moments, browse the Channel Store and launch channels with the tap of a finger. How could it possibly get better? Well, now you can stream your carefully curated music playlists and flattering family photos straight from your iPhone or Android device to your living room big screen with our brand new Play on Roku feature. Yes, it’s true. You can even set your photos to music. Did we mention that it’s free?

International customers will be happy to hear that as of later today, the app will be available in the UK, Canada and Ireland. We’ve also added improved device discovery, the ability to voice launch channels on Android (look ma, no hands!), and the option to give unique names to multiple Roku players. Be as creative as you want – we won’t judge.

Sound too good to be true? Check out this video demo from Tom Markworth, our dashing director of product management.

Play on Roku works with all Roku 2 models, the current-generation Roku HD player (model #2500), and Roku LT (models #2400 and 2450), as well as the upcoming Roku Streaming Stick.

Still have questions? We’ve got answers right hereWe’d love to hear what you think, so please let us know at feedback@roku.com. And you know what they say – if you like it then you better put a rating on it. :)

Happy streaming!

Any plans for Windows Phone 7.5 or 8.0 app in the pipeline?

    • JoshMe

The Play on Roku feature is sweet, but I would love a Windows Phone app! A Windows (maybe Win8?) app would be amazing too so that I can play any media from my computer to my Roku.

      • ImagineThat

Check out PLEX – it’s an officially supported app on Roku and there’s a pretty easy to use media server you put on your computer. It’s all free too! We use it a lot, with 2 rokus in the house, and I’ve done music, home movies, other downloaded video content, etc

I’m telling people about Plex too because you can get Youtube. A lot of people complain about not having Youtube on Roku but Plex fixes that.

Windows Phone app or give us a competitor that supports the platform so I can sell my Roku boxes and move on.

I’d love a Windows Phone app as well. There are a couple pretty good ones in the Windows Phone Store but they’re not as full featured.

+1 for a Windows Phone app!

Video content is excellent. Background audio track is not.

Nice update, though I have yet to see the Play to Roku channel on my app or Roku boxes yet. I’ll give it some time. Maybe it will show up later today. It’s nice to see you push the update to both Android and iOS at the same time. Kudos for that.

“Play to Roku” is a hidden channel, will get installed after visit to the channel store.

There is no Android app as of yet, last update there is from April. Seems Kacie jumped the gun on that one.

Ummm…there is an Android app. I’ve been using it since March. (http://goo.gl/gkHnq)

It’s says International is later today. I’m in the US and all I’m still seeing on the Play store is the version from April.

FYI David, the update for the Android app is now available.

            Thanks. Appreciate the heads up.

The press release that hit at 3AM implied it was live. RIF.

I thought so. Either way, it will show up at some point. I’m just pleased that it’s available on Android on the same day as iOS — even if it’s later in the day.

Mine on my Amaze 4G just updated.

Haven’t tried it yet, but photo and music streaming sounds awesome! I’m also really glad yall are keeping the Android app current with iOS!

I have been using Roku on iPhone, works well. I like to see identifying the Roku in a better way, lot of times to avoid buffer issues, I connect my Roku via Ethernet, then Roku becomes useless. Ofcourse its not Roku problem lol..
Also I just downloaded update today on my iPhone, Roku app crashes.

This is awesome !!! Any chance you will expand it to stream all content from iphone to tv ??

    • http://twitter.com/planettom Tom-o-matic

his statement at the end of the video “this is just the beginning for us with mobile” makes me think they have a lot more to offer in the future! Should be interesting!

Two apparent bugs in this new version. If video is streaming from the Roku 2 XS (like when playing video from Amazon Instant Video) when exiting the Roku App on my Android (Nexus 7) the video streaming stops and the Roku dumps out to the home/menu screen. Also no audio plays when enabled and selected behind the pictures.

I couldn’t get the first app to work (IOS5) and now I can’t get this one to connect (IOS6). Followed all the steps.

Noticed that Play On Roku does not update with the Android gallery on my phone. Is there someway to flush whatever cache the thumbnails are pulling from?

  • Eric

Any plans to support video? Works great for photos in my library!

  • Ryan J

I noticed it will not play music that is stored and streamed through iCloud (iTunes Match). It has to be downloaded to the iOS device. Is this a limitation in the app or a restriction from iOS?

Any chance we will be able to stream audio to the iPhone app like the roku 3 remote?

    • guest2112

I would love to have this feature so I could use headphones on my iPhone at night.

It’s been 2 years since the comments started asking for Windows Phone 8 apps. Any news?

  • Andy Dennis

Been using this for a while but can’t see anything working with playlists. What playlists can it read?

  • clickclack
