Welcome to the Roku Developer Blog

There has to be a first post, and this is it. Welcome to the Roku Developer Blog. We want to use this to use this platform to provide the Roku developer community with information that helps you build great channels — from updates about new software and SDK releases to useful code snippets and walk-throughs of features you can add to your channels. This is not intended to replace the forums, which will still be the best place for working out problems or getting specific questions answered, but we do invite you to leave feedback or questions in the comments.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to introduce some of the team responsible for the developer program:

  • Jim Funk and Ed Lee handle the business agreements and partnerships.
  • Kevin Phillips is the Developer Support Manager.  If developers have a nitty-gritty question about BrightScript, the Roku Platform, or related technologies, Kevin is usually the one to provide the authoritative answer.
  • Chris Hagedorn is the resident Roku Channel writing wizard. Chris can be found writing in-house channels like Roku Newscaster or the Holiday Spotlight and helping partners get the most from their channels.
  • Patrick Ellis (that’s me) is the Developer Program Manager.  I work with Jim, Ed and the rest of the team helping developers and partners through the process of building, publishing and promoting their channels.

To get the dialog started, what topics do you want to see covered in the blog? Please let us know in the comments.

Would love to see more details of the new features in 3.0 beta & how they might be used. Also would be nice to see a real how-to for the libraries included in the example apps, some things like how to use roHMAC and other Encryption and signature tools etc, would be nice to see all brightscript functions used in very simple code examples instead of wrapped in layers of advanced programming tricks that one has to understand before one can understand how the functions actually work. .

Any developers who could share or post articles that offer hard numbers for viewership or subscriptions would help those of us who are putting together financing packages. For instance, I found this article: http://gigaom.com/video/cord-cutting-convergence-consulting/

However, the figures reflect content creators like Hulu and Netflix. For those of us creating unique channels that target specific audiences, it’s harder to find numbers. Since I’m developing content from overseas for U.S. audiences, it would be helpful to know how similar channels are performing.

    Anyone?

I would love to see a working “SimpleGrid.brs” file that has all the code in it to pull XML data from a remote server and stream video files.

Is there a channel that will allow me to access PBS web accessible content through my Roku? By the way, love the Roku. Tell everyone about it!

I set up a live channel using playlist.m3u8 for a live stream and its working fine. I want to add a live chat feature into the channel displayed on my roku. Currently the website pulls live chat data using linq to SQL 2008 and I was wondering if it would be easier to accomplish this with a custom page an and iframe (don’t know if this is possible) …. or do I have to use XML and refresh the page on a timer??? Open for any creative ways to accomplish the task. http://cowheadtv.com
