Update: The 4.6 firmware rollout has been resumed as of 4/23. Thanks for your patience!

Today, we are rolling out 4.6, our latest free software update for Roku 2 and Roku LT players. In addition to performance and stability improvements, the new version adds the ability to change your system language.

Roku software 4.6 delivers the following goodness:

  • Improved overall system navigation performance by up to 50 percent
  • Improved overall stability
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent some channels from launching properly
  • Fixed an issue that could cause delays when launching the Netflix channel
  • Fixed an issue that could cause some channels to fail to appear on home screen
  • Improved the start of playback experience in the BBC iPlayer channel (UK only)
  • Improved playback experience when switching between HD and SD quality streams in the BBC iPlayer channel (UK only)
  • Added French language support for users in all countries

The software update will be pushed automatically to all Roku 2 and Roku LT players over the next 48 hours. If you can’t wait, select Settings > Software update > Check now from your Roku player.

You can read about what we fixed in the previous 4.3 release here. Stay tuned, if you have an older generation, we will continue to release updates as necessary.

Happy streaming!

Yay for updates and stability improvements…(though I’m on an older player)…but could you please add a soft-reboot option in a (near) future release?

The fact of the matter is, Hulu is unstable — perhaps other channels are as well, but Hulu definitely is. The Roku seems to benefit from an occasional reboot to clear out whatever crud has accumulated in its state. So: please add a nice, simple “Restart my Roku” item to the config menu, so you can do it from your couch, when it occurs to you, rather than after Hulu has crashed the Roku, by getting up and unplugging it — which is ridiculous.

Yes, yes, I realize your little puck is so perfect it didn’t even need a power switch. Look, you’re not an appliance, you’re an ecosystem, and some of the inhabitants of that ecosystem are polluters. No, you do not deserve to get painted with their failure. But do us a solid and make it a little easier to work around, eh?

    • Nas Banov

Try this combo on the remote: Home 5x, Up, Rew 2x, FF 2x
(that is, press home five times, then ^, then <> twice and hold your breath for ten seconds)

      • SuperJere

That works. I do wish there were something a little easier, though. Thank you, Nas.

        • Nas Banov

I agree – if Tivo and other set-top boxes can, so can Roku have “Restart” option in the Settings menu. A response like “but Roku does not need restart ever” would be unfortunately detached from reality

    • Thanks for your feedback – we’ll keep working to improve the Roku experience for customers. Please email us at therevolution(at)roku.com so we can look into the Hulu Plus issues you’re dealing with.

      • Themanjosh_1999

Will you guys please add usb support for more video formats…… AVI, WMA asap!!! i dont use any mkv files 🙁 ive been waiting since december for an update to be released for my roku xs that supports more video formats from my usb stick…

    • Some Canadian Roku user

I plugged my Roku into a Rack Mounted Power switch that sits under my TV. The problem of rebooting is easily solved

  • I’m sure you guys have heard from the Plex Media Server team so I was wondering if anything was done to address the “artifacts during playback” that have plagued the Plex channel since 4.2?
I’d really love to experience the improved performance (and I will as soon as my update rolls out) but am just as anxious to see the Plex issue handled.

    • I’ll put in my vote for this fix, also. Thanks!

      • Dreyvas

This has been plaguing my new Roku 2 XD, really hoping for a fix soon. It’s been great otherwise!

    • Ryan Rojas

Would love to see this fixed as well. Nothings more annoying than watching a video and every 5 minutes or so the video get distorted. Being that the Plex channel is in your official channel store shouldn’t this be addressed?

      • Legalweasel

Same here, Plex worked great until the 4.2 update. Really hope you guys get this sorted out!

      • Cubfan1138

Another vote for the artifacting issue to be repaired. Plex played perfectly pre-4.2. Now I’m beginning to lose faith that Roku intends to correct this issue. Other than this, I’ve loved my time with the XD I purchased and this is the only thing keeping me from adding Rokus to the other three TVs in my home.

        • Well, we are now on firmware 4.7 and while the Plex channel appears to have stabilized “a little”, there’s still work to be done.

I honestly hope you guys are looking into this.

  • Jammer232001

would love to have and option of ways we see the menue in stead of straight across we could have a grid or other ways of the menue look .. also maybe let roku see flashplayer

    • George Schoenstein

Totally agree, a grid would be a major improvement to the main navigation screen. Something similar to the menu on the channel store.

  • Lana

i agree with the guy regarding hulu plus having issues….i can rewind, stop, fastforward & whatever in netflix as easy as pie….but in hulu plus, it just is not happy when you do anything during a show/movie other than just watch it, as is….anything else makes it freeze & the only thing you CAN do is get up & go unplug/plug which is very irritating when you’re watching tv in bed (or your recliner as far as that goes)…and i’m sorry, i don’t mean to be rude but this is just silly (see below)….

    >Try this combo on the remote: Home 5x, Up, Rew 2x, FF 2x
    >(that is, press home five times, then ^, then <> twice and hold your breath for ten seconds)

    • Hi Lana, so sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with Hulu Plus on your Roku. Please email us at therevolution(at)roku.com so we can look into the issue.

      • Nas Banov

Uh yeah, reality calls – hello? Take *any* iPhone or Android remote app for Roku and try to use with Hulu+/-. Does keyboard work – no. Do arrow keys get “stuck” when rewinding – yes. This happens so reliably, there is nothing to email about. Can’t pretend this is single customer issue. Will you fix it or not, just say?

      • Jsgmmd

        please stop insulting everyone with:

“Hi, so sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with Hulu Plus on your Roku. Please email us at therevolution(at)roku.com so we can look into the issue.

No-one needs to email. You have been well aware of the problem for nearly a year now. This type of response from you only angers people.

  • Dreyvas

I’m also hoping for a fix for the artifact problems that occur during Plex playback.

it may not even be a roku problem, it may be the plex app at fault

    • TerrapinM

Please fix the Plex artifact issues. This is an official channel now so it really should be tested and working. I have stopped recommending Roku to anyone until this issue is fixed.

my roku cant even find the update :/ it still says 4.3 is the newest update

    • Darren

Same here – my XS player says 4.3 build 1057 is the latest.

    • Rick C.

Yep, same here for my 2 XS.

    • Mark

+1 for seeing 4.3 is the current version

According to a post on the support site, the 4.6 release is temporarily on hold.

“4.6 is on hold for release at the moment, due to a minor bug we discovered during the rollout. This should NOT affect Canadian users (ie, you should be update soon with the correct firmware). We have the bug isolated, and hope to have it handled in the next couple of days.

  • Mike McElroy

Oddly enough, my Streaming Roku stopped working yesterday about 5 pm. It hasn’t worked since. There is a very unformed and uncooperative person working at JustAnwere named littlerusty. There is no way to contact anyone live at Netflix. I have been a subscriber for several years now and feel I deserve better. I have also worked as a System administrator for Napa County for 20 years. Little Rusty deserves at least a reprimand.

    • We’re very sorry to hear that, Mike! Please email us at therevolution(at)roku.com and we’ll do our best to make it right.

i am still having the same issue my kids are not happy about streaming netflix.

  • I’m not seeing the update. It tells me I’m up to date still on 4.3 on my Roku 2 XS. As for the Plex issues people have mentioned about visual artifacts, I use Plex pretty heavily to stream from my file server and I haven’t had any problems since the last Plex channel and server updates.

  • No go on update… I tried, keep getting message that 4.3 is newest.. 1:46am EDT Apr 19, 2012

  • Mike

you guys should check out Apple Tv vs Roku

  • The writing is very good, useful like!

  • Eternalgreenknight

I have a Roku 2XS and tried downloading… It says I have the current version at 4.3. Quite often we have noticed that it becomes non-responsive and requires a reboot. Was hoping the new software would help, but it’s not even downloading.

  • Justkurt

Could you please provide a more specific ETA for the update?

  • Cacook10

Can you get college Football in the fall? What channel, if so?

  • Lcueva23

    downloading now!

Great update everything you said is true super fast uploading and lunching channels. But i am still disappointed about the new update there is still more to come in the future.

Netflix, is the first streaming channel since 2010 was better fast and more HD. Netflix is missing few stuff we are 7.99 to enjoy netflix without disppointed or reboot every 5 mins because the roku 2 cant handled it. Netflix 15 secs delayed subtitles, Netflix setting disable search genre, 500 queue instant watch (original) , Just for kids feature and new netflix layout please full library photos of movies.

Roku please bring back the old stuff back

Roku where is love of earth saver please add a off and on feature to save earth and power.

The whole new menu design layout like apple and others, new color , new size and 720p layout and better

everything is super great but you guys are missing the big thing netflix setting 500 instant queue to disable the search i got kids 2 to 11 they want to enjoy good netflix please.

    • Jonathan E. Schneeweis

I agree. When will the Netflix channel be updated?!? Didn’t Netflix originally “spawn” Roku to be its nacent streaming platform? The MOST annoying thing about the Netflix channel IMHO is that whenever you exit out of a show or series, the whole list of jacket titles refreshes (slowly) and shuffles about. So when you think you’ve selected the next show to watch you find that your selection has either done nothing or selected the wrong show. This pisses my 3.5yr old off to no end as he selects shows by picture and as soon as he has, the pictures (jacket covers) all move and inevitably the show he wanted is no longer displayed on the screen. This is using hardwired ethernet to MOCA to FIOS (35/35) so it’s not a network latency issue. Seems to be a “feature” of the Roku interface only — doesn’t happen on my PS3.

While the Netflix UI’s are better on my other platforms (PS3 in particular — including the “Just for Kids” feature which my son really likes), the kids capability is kind of dumb as there’s no password protection to exit it. If your kids mash buttons they will eventually break out to the non-kid UI. Likewise, if they just restart the device and re-enter the Netflix app they can choose Kid or regular.

they went from 4.0 to 4.6 and still nothing same problem over and over. Netflix needs to be back to its original thats what makes netflix better. its really annoying more freeze, slow, subtitles sucks, shuffles titles and more.

the speed is great but the channels are still worst and nothing is perfect. i cant even watch a show or movie for a at least a hour it just jam and shut down anytime it wants.

come on roku please fix the netflix channel for us we are 7.99 to enjoy some tv.

  • Sliverbemr

I dont notice any difference in the new update.

  • Themanjosh_1999

Will you guys please add usb support for more video formats…… AVI, WMA asap!!! i dont use any mkv files 🙁 ive been waiting since december for an update to be released for my roku xs that supports more video formats from my usb stick…

  • Lucci_42

I enjoy watching foreign films, overall I don’t mind reading, but would love to have the option do listening audio in English.

  • rrd4heat

Only a purple screen now during playback! Not good. Before the update had problems with picture and sound going out during playback for a few seconds at a time, white noise and then sometimes no sound once picture came back. Anyone else having this problem?
    Roku 2XS

    • ca0v

Yes…changed resolution to 720p and it fixed it temporarily but now it’s back.

  • Casper

Please add device wide parental control

  • Frederick P

any updates for the netflix app coming soon??

  • Perryw31

I had one of the worst customer support experiences of my life with your “ROKU Technical Support” and its hapless chat utility.

The first person with whom I opened as session terminated the support session. I opened another session.

I put in roughly a total of 2 or 2 and 1/2 hours into the problem. My time is worth far more than the cost of ROKU.

Ultimately, I was advised (concerning the Roku which actually worked 6 months ago) to contact my ISP or router manufacturer.

The Roku people weren’t attacking the Roku problem (which wasn’t picking up my wireless signal). Roku was broken. Anyone who comes into my home can pick up my wireless signal !!!!!!!!!!! Roku technical support was blaming my router which is still working fine.

Clearly the Roku product, which worked at one point in time, doesn’t now. Roku technical support wanted me to alter my Airport Extreme router settings. Are you kidding me?

I’ve had enough of Roku. Their support service is a joke – it’s merely a limited English speaking “chat utility”. The Roku product, evidently after less than 20 hours of actual use over the last year, is a piece of crap.

I’m ripping it out of my system and telling every one I know what a lousy product Roku is – only eclipsed by your company’s poor service.

If anyone buys a Roku – you are own your own folks.

I live in Mexico and with TelMex I get a maximum download speed of 5mbs.

    I LOVE MY ROKU!!!!!

I use it with GetUSAWebsites.TV (Access code 812) They’re different in that they only jump in when the geo check is done, but the rest of the time it’s a direct connection NOT going through a proxy. The result is that I ALWAYS get a HD signal awesome video on Netflix, and Hulu. I hate other services where too many users bog down the server, and the quality goes up and down. (Mostly down and skipping!) Grrrrr….

I think GetUSAWebsites approach is superior, and am VERY happy.

My local friend has only a 1.7mbs download speed, and they are using it with their Roku and they love it too.

GetUSAWebsites has 2 plans. Basic is $4.99 and Deluxe is $7.99 a month. I seriously couldn’t live without it!

Please ADD SUPPORT FOR AVI container! PLEASE!!!

  • Mad@Roku

After this last update in spring when the menu changed, it has been frozen on the menu, I can’t even get Netflix or Pandora to work by using the remote buttons and I have unplugged many times, even left it unplugged for a day and it still has just not worked right. I wish I never had updated it, I liked the old menu a lot more too. Does anyone know how to help me? I miss Netflixs!

    • Mad@Roku

      I’m using a Roku 2 XD… I hope this is a easy fix 🙂
