Today we’re happy to share some exciting new features included in Roku OS 7.6, the latest version of our operating system for all Roku devices. These new features and improvements make it easier to discover and watch the entertainment you love. The great benefit to owning a Roku device is that current models (after May 2011) receive our Roku OS updates.

In the spirit of making it easier for you to find great content, we now have 300+ channels in Roku Search across all Roku devices. With Roku Search, it’s easy to find where movies and shows are available for free, or see unbiased results ranked by price across top channels.

Roku OS 7.6 will roll out over the next few weeks and is expected to be complete before June.

New Roku OS 7.6 Features:

  • More Ways to Watch for Roku TVs (U.S. only) – This feature provides an enhanced viewing experience based on what you watch on cable or satellite boxes, or broadcast antennas, connected to your HD Roku TV. You’ll be required to enable the feature via an opt-in prompt on your Roku TV once the feature is available or when setting up a new Roku TV. More Ways to Watch can recognize the show or movie you’re watching on these boxes and antennas using Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology and suggest additional viewing options via streaming to enhance your experience. Additional viewing options may include the ability to watch from the beginning, watch more episodes of the same show and/or view suggestions for similar entertainment available to stream.

More Ways to Watch can be turned on or off at any time in the Roku TV settings menu. If you choose to turn off More Ways to Watch after it was first enabled, viewing information collected prior to the feature being turned off will not be deleted.

*Note – More Ways to Watch will be available for 4K Roku TV models this Summer.

  • Updates to Live TV Pause for Roku TV – When using the Live TV Pause feature on your Roku TV, you’ll now see thumbnail images displayed on the screen while pausing, rewinding, or fast forwarding. This makes it easier to identify where you are in the movie or show to resume playing at the moment you want to watch. In addition, Live TV Pause now supports our Closed Caption on Replay feature. When this option is turned on, you can use the replay button on your Roku TV remote to go back a few moments in the movie or show you’re watching to view closed captions for dialog you may have missed.

  • Favorite channels list for Roku TV tuner –You can now create a list of your favorite broadcast channels when you have a broadcast antenna connected to your Roku TV. To create your own favorite channels list, simply press the left button when watching over-the-air TV on your Roku TV to bring up the list of available channels. Press the options button “*” on your Roku TV remote to add individual channels to your favorites list. Once created, the favorites list will allow you to browse only the tuner channels you’ve added to that list. You can switch back to the all-channels list to view all available tuner channels at any time.

  • Custom input naming for Roku TV – In an effort to give Roku TV customers even more ways to customize their experience, you now have the ability to assign custom names to your inputs icons. To name an input, just highlight the input tile on your Roku TV home screen and press the options button “*” on your Roku TV remote. Scroll through the list of pre-populated input names until you reach “set custom name and icon” and press OK. Now you can enter any name you’d like (up to 15 characters) for the input device for easier identification on Roku TV home screen.

  • Faster resume from standby for some Roku TV models – HD Roku TV models will now resume from standby mode a few seconds faster than before the Roku OS 7.6 update so you can get to the entertainment you love more quickly.

Where are the updates for Roku streaming devices?

    • Hi Joseph, take a look at the release notes for the list of improvements and bug fixes for Roku streaming players: https://blog.roku.com/roku-os-7-6-release-notes/

      • Craig

Roku Mod? See my comment above? You all really need to consider it, guys! Support MPEG-2/TS on the boxes to allow for HDHomeRun’s guys? I know Silicondust has begged you all to do it too, because they told me that they have…so just do it! I don’t care whether it adds to the cost of the devices! Let people pay extra to unlock the capability, if they want to do so!

        • CX1

But then you wont buy a Roku TV! Oh wait… I was never going to buy a Roku TV.

          • Craig

There is no excuse for Roku not to work directly with and support Silicondust’s hardware to fill in the gap for cord-cutters. None! Zip! Nada! You would truly think they would be excited about embracing it, complete with MPEG-2 codec support and even a full-featured 2 week OTA channel guide with DVR/time-shifting capabilities? I mean? What company in their right mind wouldn’t wanna go after that market???

            Hello:

You may want to consider a Google Nexus Player if you want Live TV integration with your SD HD Homerun network tuner. I highly recommend a Roku plus a secondary Kodi/Browser supported streamer on each TV so you get the most content. I use Roku for daily use and the others for free movie or browser content. The Nexus player has Chromecast support so you can also cast anything from a web browser.

          • Craig

Yes, I know about the Live Channels app as featured on my Nvidia Shield 2017 and Xiaomi MiBox.

      • Alan

Right, so basically we’re going to get a change to stop accidental button presses stopping streaming and a couple of minor bug fixes? Not exactly an impressive list of changes then!
What about simple improvements like allowing us to reconfigure the shortcut buttons for services that have gone bust rather than having a useless button? (suggested this a couple of years ago…)

        • Marcus

One new feature listed later in the release notes is Mobile Private Listening for the Roku 4.

          • Alan

I suppose – never use it via the remote really and I’ve got a Roku 3 so not of relevance to me, but agree at least it’s something non-Roku TV!

      • Brian

Those are bug fixes only for streaming devices. So when are you and Amazon going to do something about the disaster introduced in December?

    • Mike Johnson

RokuTV owners have been asking the same thing about the previous updates.

  • Craig

I still wish you all would support MPEG-TS/MPEG2 and integrate with Silicondust’s HD HomeRun platform. Even if it costs more? Just allow it for people who want it via a Roku Store purchase?

    • Hi Craig, we passed your request over to the team!

      • Craig

Oh I shan’t hold my breath. I know a thing or two about glacial paces…

Just work with Silicondust to bring HDHomerun OTA integration onto the Roku boxes and sets. From licensing MPEG-2 for the boxes to implementing MPEG transport stream support? Just create a full OTA time-shifting/DVR/guide experience on the Roku platform?

  • Dave Williams

It would really be nice if we Canadian Roku owners could get an Amazon Prime Video channel, now that we can subscribe to the service. It sucks to be limited to watching Amazon Prime Videos on my phone or PC when I have a perfectly good Roku 3 hooked to my TV.

    • Johnny_B_Goode

You can with a sub to prime US and a vpn. Been on it for years now in Canada. Had Hulu for a long time too and of course NETFLIX forever.

      • G5 Plus Amazonessed

        Are you club-fn-footed?

        • Johnny_B_Goode

          yeah ya ass wipe!

      • Dave Williams

That doesn’t address my problem in the slightest. I already subscribe to Amazon Prime Canada and want to access my legally subscribed content on my Roku, like Americans can access theirs; I don’t want to illegally circumvent international content rights laws AND pay for two more services.

        • Johnny_B_Goode

But the Canadian service only offers a few shows produced by Amazon only. It’s not illegal as you pay for the service at Amazon’s US store. You are not stealing anything! VPN’s are not illegal anywhere except dictatorships, communist countries and maybe Russia in the near future. I pay for everything on my ROKU including subscriptions to NETFLIX and HULU and don’t steal anything. I you work for Bell or Rogers I understand the theft propaganda but it’s really you extorting average Canadians.

        • Johnny_B_Goode

So just get rid of the ROKU dave cause it ain’t happening, probably ever.

  • CX1

So TV only update? How about letting me use my network tuner on Roku without jumping through 50 hoops? Like every other streamer out there.

    • Mike Johnson

Roku doesn’t sell TVs. They license their tech to some TV manufacturers in place of those manufacturers developing their own “Smart” operating system.

      • CX1

Do you think they license it for free?

        • Mike Johnson

No. But I also don’t think they sell TVs. I mean, you could rephrase your snarky question. Also, what you want isn’t just a “Hey lets do this tomorrow!”. It requires licensing for MPEG2 (I assume you are talking about a SiliconDust product) and a bunch of engineering to accept the stream.

  • Daniel Poulin

I live in Ontario, CANADA. I did not get any updates from ROKU for the OS 7.6. I got the ROKU Streamstick 3600X. When well we get it?

  • Alan

I was excited to see an update but all seems to be TV tuner-related and mainly US-only. What is the for those of us elsewhere in the world with streaming devices? 🙁

  • Ryan Clark

I cut the cable cord about 7 years ago thanks to Roku, thank you for creating this device!! Any plans on adding a tuner to a standalone Roku box? I have a roku TV and I love the features, if there was a standalone box I’d be there day one to buy it!!

  • Derek

Please tell me the release makes spotify music quality normal?

  • Adrian

    Needs Kodi;-)

  • Chad Olson

Will Roku ever broaden support for audio streams within video content over USB? At present, my ‘new’ Roku3 is less capable than older WD devices, so my wife can’t take advantage of the Roku3’s remote+headphones ability without me converting much of my library and any new files. I don’t want to stream from a PC and impact performance of said PC.

  • Douglas Vaccarezza

Does Roku publish a listing of which cable or satellite carriers support the various “TV Everywhere” channels? It’s frustrating to add the channel, enter the activation code, only to find out it’s not supported by my cable carrier. I know that they are constantly adding new carriers, but they are not communicated when they are added, that I know, so I’m forced to add the channel & go through the unnecessary steps…

  • Ray

Will this fix the audio popping/chirpping/cracking every 15 minutes or so? Will this fix the no audio for movies that are DD+ 7.1? Will this fix the random HDCP 2.2 errors? These are all problems that several people, including myself, are experiencing ever since the release of 7.5 for the Roku Ultra. It has been 4+ months with no update or communication on a fix. Nobody is saying if 7.6 will fix these issues.

  • Marc MacMaster

Was hoping you would allow for proper, simple, digital audio passthrough on roku premiere+. My 5 year old wdtv can do this. Still hoping that will be a reality some day.

  • Paul

So…does this get us any closer to a Directv Now app? This is the $64 queston.

Will this have improvements to the Hulu channel? It doesn’t ever play any videos, just says “receiving” and then goes back to the Hulu table of contents. Its the only station that does that and it is extremely frustrating!!! Multiple coworkers experience the same issue (with some of them returning the Roku since their cord cutting was based on the premise Hulu would be a working option)

Can someone explain THAT??
